iPad Tips and Tricks (Part Three)

With iOS 4.3, you can change the function of the little switch found on the right side of the iPad. Originally, it turns the audio on and off without you having to press the volume controls. Basically, it works as an instant mute button.

The new iPad is equipped with a gorgeous display and tons of new features. What do all these upgrades mean? A bigger battery!

Previously, we looked at three cool features that will surely increase productivity when using the iPad. These three are the ability to use cellular networks overseas, copying text easily and preventing unwanted purchases.

With the ability to connect to cellular networks overseas, you’ll definitely be connected wherever you go, even while you’re on the French countryside. Just be sure you have enough money to pay the roaming fees when you get home.

The second feature, the ability to highlight huge chunks of text while typing, is also a most welcome feature for tablets. To highlight a paragraph, just tap on the text four times and everything will be highlighted. You can cut and paste it to other apps easily.

The third trick is really important – preventing unwanted purchases. By setting restrictions on what you can do to your iPad, you can control the expenditure. If you know someone that knows your credit card number and would like to purchase apps under your name, you can stop that. No more pesky siblings!

Before you make the choice to sell your iPad though, here are some more tips you should know.

Custom Gestures

The iOS is filled with several touch gestures that are certainly helpful. Swiping for scrolling and other stuff are standard on a tablet.

There are other gestures though, that really help increase productivity even more – these are custom gestures. Yes, you’ve read that right. You can create your own touch gestures!
All you have to do is go to Settings, then General, then select Accessibility and turn on AssistiveTouch. After that, tap Create New Gesture.

You’ll be able to create any gesture you like, such as drawing a circle or a square. Then you can assign a corresponding action. Cool right?

Saving Your Battery

You may not notice it, but the new iPad is actually thicker than the iPad 2. With that in mind, the bigger battery takes a longer time to charge, which can be quite an annoyance.

To help you save your battery, just lower the brightness of your screen and try using the Wi-Fi only. Other connectivity should be turned off, such as Bluetooth and close all apps that are suspended.

Use the Side Switch Differently

Now, you can change the function to lock it to whatever orientation you’re most comfortable with. If you find yourself more comfortable using the iPad in a landscape orientation, you can assign it like that.

All you have to do is go to Settings, then select General. Go to the “Use Side Switch to” and change it to Lock Orientation.

We’ll look at a few more tips and tricks that you can do with your iPad. There’s plenty more!
